NT-proBNP

What's
NT-proBNP
?
NT-proBNP is a protein created by your heart when it's working harder than normal. Think of it as a message from your heart, sent through your bloodstream, asking for some extra support. The NT-proBNP test allows us to understand what your heart is telling us, providing important information about its performance and how well it's handling its tasks.
If Your Levels Are High
Elevated NT-proBNP levels might mean that your heart is working harder than it should be. This can happen for various reasons, such as having high blood pressure, problems with your heart valves, or other conditions that put extra demands on your heart, like kidney disease or serious infections. Some medications, like those for managing blood pressure or heart failure, can also affect your NT-proBNP levels. Keep in mind that high levels don't give a definite diagnosis, but they do suggest that your heart might be under more stress than normal. To figure out the exact cause, more investigation is needed.
Symptoms of High Levels
Symptoms of high levels of NT-proBNP could include shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet, and rapid or irregular heartbeats.
If Your Levels are Low
A low NT-proBNP level suggests that your heart is doing a good job handling its workload and isn't under much stress. This might be because you're taking good care of yourself with regular exercise, a balanced diet, and keeping stress in check. However, certain medications, like those for high blood pressure or heart failure, could also play a role in lowering NT-proBNP levels. Additionally, conditions such as obesity or an underactive thyroid might contribute to lower levels of this protein. So, low NT-proBNP levels could mean your heart is in good shape or that other factors are influencing the results.
Symptoms of Low Levels
Symptoms of low levels of NT-proBNP are typically not noticeable, as this condition often doesn't present any specific signs or discomfort.
