In this lecture, Functional & Metabolic Psychiatry expert Dr. James Greenblatt examines the well-researched connections between MTHFR mutations and mental health, and discusses the extraordinary value of incorporating MTHFR gene testing into the modern therapeutic arsenal. After reviewing the biological roles of folate, Dr. Greenblatt will review the most common MTHFR gene variants – “T” and “C” – and the metabolic impacts of heterozygous vs. homozygous presentations on MTHFR enzyme function. Studies demonstrating robust associations between MTHFR variants and various psychiatric outcomes will also be presented.
Finally, Dr. Greenblatt will present evidence-based recommendations for the comprehensive assessment of folate and MTHFR status, as well as strategies for folate supplementation to support optimal brain health.
