About the Test

What is the GI Effects® Fundamentals Test?

The GI Effects® Fundamentals Test from Genova Diagnostics evaluates the overall health of the GI tract. The main biomarkers from the GI Effects Fundamentals Profile provide key clinical information for three main gastrointestinal functional areas: Digestion/Absorption, Inflammation/Immunology, and Gut Microbiome.

This is the 3-day version of the test; it is also available as a 1-day test.

An imbalance of the normal gut microbiota or dysbiosis may lead to gastrointestinal conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and wider systemic alterations such as celiac disease, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, malnutrition, skin conditions, autoimmune disorders, immune system imbalances, and multiple inflammatory disorders.

The GI Effects Fundamentals Test involves the analysis of the stool profile with optional add-on tests to allow the physician the selection of relevant biomarkers according to each patient, including parasitology and others.

What Does GI Effects® Test Measure?

The GI Effects® Fundamentals Test from Genova Diagnostics informs the possible cause of common gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, indigestion, gas, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation.

The minimum biomarkers measured by the test are Pancreatic Elastase-1, products of Protein Breakdown, Fecal Fat, Calprotectin, Eosinophil Protein X, Fecal Occult Blood, Metabolic indicators, Bacteria and mycology cultures, Bacteria and mycology sensitivities.

The following markers are add-ons, not part of the regular test

  • Campylobacter
  • Clostridium difficile
  • Escherichia coli
  • Helicobacter pylori
  • Fecal Lactoferrin
  • Macro Exam for Worms
  • Zonulin Family Peptide
  • KOH Preparation for Yeast

What Type of Sample is Needed to Complete the GI Effects® Fundamentals Test?

An at-home stool sample is required over 3 days.

Why 3 Days vs 1 Day?

Transit times vary from patient to patient. 3 Days of testing can give a more comprehensive overview of the what is going on with the patients individual digestion as well as has a higher chance of detecting a parasite infection.

Physicians may want to use the GI Effects Fundamentals test to profile gastrointestinal biomarkers to support the development of strategic interventions.

The GI Effects Fundamentals fecal biomarker panel in the stool sample assesses multiple functional areas contributing to symptoms. For example, diarrhea can originate from several causes, including inflammation, food sensitivities, allergies, or pancreatic exocrine insufficiency. The physician may want to order the test to rule out the cause of the symptoms.

About the Test

The GI Effects® Fundamentals profile provides a cursory evaluation of the overall health of the GI tract, including insights into digestion/absorption, inflammation/immune response, gut microbial metabolites, and potential dysbiotic or pathological organisms. This is the 3-day version of the test; it is also available as a 1-day test.
