RBC Folate

What's
RBC Folate
?
RBC Folate is a way to measure the amount of folic acid, a kind of B vitamin, stored in your red blood cells. These cells carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body and live for about four months. So, the RBC Folate test gives a longer-term look at your body's folic acid levels compared to a regular blood test. Folic acid is vital for many body functions, like making DNA and other genetic material. It's also important for your body to create healthy red blood cells. If you don't have enough folic acid, your body can't make enough healthy red blood cells to transport oxygen, which can impact your overall health.
If Your Levels Are High
Having higher than normal RBC Folate levels means your body might be getting more folic acid than it usually needs. This can happen if you eat a lot of foods rich in folic acid, take supplements containing this vitamin, or use certain medications that can raise folic acid levels. Sometimes, high levels can also point to a health issue that affects how your body absorbs or uses folic acid. While too much folic acid isn't usually harmful, it can hide a shortage of another important B vitamin, B12, which is crucial for nerve function and making DNA and red blood cells.
Symptoms of High Levels
Symptoms of high levels of RBC Folate are generally not noticeable as the body typically excretes excess folic acid. However, if it's masking a B12 deficiency, symptoms could include fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, or weight loss.
If Your Levels are Low
Low RBC Folate levels might mean that your body isn't getting enough folic acid, an essential B vitamin. This could be because you're not eating enough foods rich in folic acid, like leafy greens, citrus fruits, and beans. Some medications, like seizure medications and birth control pills, can also affect how well your body absorbs folic acid. Additionally, health conditions that make it harder for your body to absorb nutrients, such as celiac disease or Crohn's disease, could play a role in lower RBC Folate levels. It's important to note that alcohol can also mess with your body's ability to use folic acid properly.
Symptoms of Low Levels
Symptoms of low levels of RBC Folate could include fatigue, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, irritability, and a swollen tongue.
