Topiramate: Uses, Side Effects, and Considerations

Topiramate, commonly prescribed under brand names like Topamax® and Topiragen®, is FDA-approved to help manage seizures in people with epilepsy and to support migraine prevention in those with chronic migraines. This medication has been well-studied, is generally effective, and is considered cost-efficient. However, like any medication, it may come with side effects that patients should discuss with their healthcare provider.

Topiramate supports migraine prevention by influencing chemical and electrical signals in the brain. It does this by:
