Lychee at a Glance

Despite its health and wellness benefits, lychee is a fruit that’s typically not well-known in the United States. Learn more about this versatile fruit below.

The Origins of Lychee

Lychee is a tropical and subtropical fruit originating in northern Vietnam and China, though it’s grown commercially in more than 20 different countries globally. China and India are top producers of lychee. Numerous varieties exist with varying chemical, physical, phytochemical, and nutritional properties.

Lychee trees grow to 30-50 feet tall with glossy leaves that produce pale, tiny white to yellow flowers and pink or red fruits with leathery, bumpy skin. The pulp of lychee is white, surrounding a brown seed.

Lychee Varieties

About 2,000 species of lychee exist, varying slightly in size, shape, growing region, color, and flavor. Examples include sweet cliff, bengal, brewster, hanging green, sweetheart, emperor, early large red, and various other varieties.

Nutritional Profile of Lychee

Lychee fruits are packed with essential nutrients, including antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber — offering an array of health perks.

Vitamins and Minerals

The nutritional value of a 1-cup portion of lychee is as follows:

Nutrition content varies among the different lychee varieties, even when lychee trees are grown in similar conditions.

Because lychee is an excellent source of vitamin C, antioxidants, potassium, and other essential nutrients, it may help support skin health, a healthy immune system, and overall well-being.

Lychee’s Role in a Balanced Diet

Lychee plays a vital role in maintaining a balanced diet. It’s low in calories, rich in micronutrients, and high in water (lychee consists of about 82% water), making it a potential option for promoting satiety, supporting hydration, and contributing to a balanced diet.

Health Benefits of Lychee

Because of its dense nutritional composition, lychee offers an array of health and wellness perks, including (but not limited to):

Immune Support

Lychee’s high vitamin C content may help support a healthy immune system. Some researchers note that lychee contains nutrients that may support overall health

Studies found that vitamin C enhances immunity, while vitamin C deficiency impairs the body’s immune system and increases the risk of infections

Antioxidant Properties

Lychee’s antioxidants may help support the body’s defense against oxidative stress. Researchers demonstrate that fermented lychee seeds are natural ingredients for cosmetics with strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-aging properties (and good human safety ratings).

Oligonol, an antioxidant polyphenolic compound found in lychee fruit, provides both anti-inflammatory and potentially anti-aging effects. Researchers say that due to lychee’s high levels of antioxidants, this fruit may help prevent early aging.

Heart Health

Studies suggest that lychee’s anti-inflammatory characteristics may help support heart health. Experts demonstrate that antioxidant-rich, high-fiber, and high-potassium lychee fruits help reduce high blood pressure and lessen the risk of heart attacks and strokes

Some research suggests that nutrients in lychee may support healthy blood lipid levels and overall metabolic health.

Digestive Health

Lychee’s fiber content may help support digestive health. In traditional Chinese medicine, lychee has been used for centuries to support digestive health.

Other Health and Wellness Benefits

In addition to the health and wellness perks listed above, researchers found other advantages linked to consuming lychee. Lychee fruit contains nutrients that may support metabolic health, joint mobility, and overall well-being.

Its nutrients also support red blood cell formation, metabolism, healthy weight management, and electrolyte balance

Lychee Beyond the Kitchen

Lychee’s uses extend beyond the kitchen. Examples of other lychee applications include:

Lychee in Skincare

Studies suggest lychee may support skin health, with research indicating that lychee seed fermentation contains compounds that may help reduce signs of aging.

Consider a DIY lychee face mask at home using the following natural ingredients:

Simply blend together all or some of the ingredients, apply the mixture to your face for 10-20 minutes, and wash it off to achieve a healthy, radiant glow.

Lychee in Traditional Medicine

Lychee has a long history of use in traditional medicine for a variety of wellness practices, though these uses may not be validated by modern scientific research.

Lychee’s immune-supportive and antiviral effects make it an excellent option for lessening the risk of or severity of illnesses.
