We are so excited to welcome Gemelli Biotech to Rupa Health! We had a great conversation with Ani Pandit, Head of Marketing and Operations at Gemelli Biotech, to learn more about the company and the tests they offer.Β
Hi, Ani! It is great to chat with you today. Can you tell me a little about Gemelli Biotechβs background?Β
Gemelli Biotech was founded in 2018 in partnership with the MAST (Medically Associated Science and Technology) program at Cedars Sinai. The founders are some of the world's leading scientists in the GI space who also treat patients regularly. Gemelli's founders wanted to start a patient-centric lab that filled unmet needs for precision diagnostics for GI diseases, including IBS and SIBO. Their vision continues to be a lab that operates mindfully, treats patients compassionately, and empowers clinicians to find answers in more efficient and effective ways.Β
Wow, what a powerful company mission. What is your favorite part about being in this industry?
We all love helping patients find answers that set them on a road to recovery through personalized treatment.
That is amazing! Personalized medicine is so important, and I love that itβs becoming more mainstream.
What kinds of tests do you currently offer?Β
We currently offer two tests. trio-smart is a breath test measuring hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulfide to aid in the diagnosis of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), intestinal methanogenic overgrowth (IMO), and excess hydrogen sulfide. Gases are measured using a proprietary gas chromatography device. trio-smart is the only clinical breath test available that can measure hydrogen sulfide.Β
ibs-smart is a diagnostic blood test for post-infectious IBS. The blood test measures validated biomarkers for IBS, anti-vinculin, and anti-CdtB and has over 95% positive predictive value. ibs-smart offers a positive diagnostic strategy, an approach recommended by the American College of Gastroenterology's Clinical Guideline for the Management of IBS.Β
Fantastic! What types of practitioners order these tests? What are they looking to diagnose?Β
Our tests are used primarily by gastroenterologists, naturopaths, and functional medicine practitioners. However, more and more primary care physicians are also finding value in our tests. Practitioners are looking to diagnose IBS, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), intestinal methanogenic overgrowth (IMO), and excess hydrogen sulfide.
Excellent! We have many different types of practitioners on Rupa that are excited about using your tests in their practice.Β
Are you working on anything new and exciting right now?Β
We are currently working on expanding our facilities and scaling our operations to keep up with the demand for our tests. Our future vision includes adding new, innovative diagnostics for GI diseases to our catalog to help practitioners and patients.
Amazing! I cannot wait to see what tests you create next. Is there anything else you would like practitioners to know about Gemelli Biotech?Β
Gemelli means "twins" and indicates our lab's twin purpose: to develop and distribute precision diagnostics for GI diseases and to support philanthropic causes related to microbiome health.Β
Wow, what a great way to end our conversation. Thank you for your time, Ani! We look forward to growing our partnership with Gemelli Biotech.Β
